January is Thyroid Awareness Month

This is a topic near to me since I live with a thyroid disease.

In 2011, I went for a routine physical and my doctor noticed a slight enlargement on the front of my neck where the thyroid gland is located.  At the time, I didn’t notice it nor experience any common symptoms associated with this butterfly shaped gland.  This is unfortunately common as the majority of individuals with thyroid issues aren’t even aware of it.

Over 20 million Americans have thyroid related conditions with the majority being women due to our reproductive health.

After being sent to a specialist and having routine tests I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland.

I was 25 at the time, healthy and active her entire life and remember feeling a mix of negative thoughts and emotions.

After a few days with the reality now setting in, I accepted this health issue wasn’t happening to me, but for me, and the wake up call inspired me to not only pursue a career in fitness and wellness, but my calling to influence others to become an advocate for their own health and self-care.

Through genetics, lifestyle and the natural aging process we may be dealt or live with conditions that impact our health. But we can choose to be proactive, and take preventative measures and advocate for ourselves.

**Update: I currently meet with my endocrinology team annually and have routine tests to monitor any changes.
